Thank you so much to everyone who commented — your button stories and ideas and tips were really wonderful to read! So many of us fell in love with buttons as kids, and reading about other people’s favorite childhood memories of playing with buttons was such a treat, and so familiar too.
And I’m so excited that my dear friend and guest contributor Diane of CraftyPod posted the first-ever review of Button It Up today! She was kind enough to say, “I had a little glimpse into the making of this book, and got to watch Susan acquire insanely-beautiful buttons from all kinds of sources. I think that’s part of the fun of Button It Up – not only are the projects wonderful, you also get a huge dose of button eye-candy. Yum yum.” Thank you, Diane!
See you next week, with more giveaways on some of myfavoritecraftysites, and some updates here: resources, project extras, and more. I’m so excited that the book is officially out on Tuesday!
I thought I’d start off posting some fun button things I’ve spotted this week… I just adore this lovely embellished notebook cover project by my friend (and Button It Up contributor) Diane Gilleland! It’s such a cool idea, I especially love the circle pattern she did.

So in honor of Button It Up, I wanted to spotlight some of the super cool button-related stuff that I’ve seen on the Coraline site and at the premiere! The ticket to the afterparty was this button key. If you’ve seen the film, it looks very very familiar…
I got to wear some of my favorite pieces from the book to the premiere: the Silver Spotlight button drop earrings, the Pearlescent knotted necklace, and Nicole Vasbinder’s lovely Shades of Gray Evening Bag.
After the screening, we walked over to the afterparty (keys in hand) at the art museum. There were button-embellished luminaries to guide everyone over, through the park — a really cool and spooky series of path markers.
The party was amazing — Laika had some of the most elaborate sets brought over from their warehouses and we got to see them up close, which was so cool. (More on that here.) There were also some fantastic spinning button-lights projected on the floor — I took this tiny ten-second video of one of them.
I’m so excited to announce two book events here in Portland to celebrate the March 3 release of Button It Up! If you’re local, I would love it if you can stop by either or both of these, I think they’ll be a lot of fun.
The very first one is at Powell’s Books on Friday, March 20, at 7:30, all the way upstairs in the lovely Pearl Room. I’ll do a reading, sign books, and offer up some favorite bits and pieces from my own button collection to do a craft project with, too: button hairclips! Some of my Portland contributors will be there too, along with lots and lots of the 80 book projects. The Bead Simple event I did there last year was fantastic and I’m really looking forward to this one too, thank you to Powell’s for having me again.
Powell’s Books, 1005 W. Burnside St. in downtown Portland, 503-228-4651
I’ll also be doing a crafty event with my local contributors at Bolt Fabric Boutique the following weekend. Stop by the shop on the afternoon of Saturday, March 28 at 4:00 and do a craft project with me: button magnets + pushpins! Anyone who buys a copy of the book from Bolt will get a vintage button grab bag as a thank-you, and we’ll also be giving away a fantastic prize package during the event — fabric, gift certificates, buttons, and other crafty surprises. I’ll post some pictures when we put everything together!
